UC Habitat for Humanity Feeling Effects of Construction Boom

Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity is gearing up for repair projects, and available contractors are becoming more difficult to find.

Executive Director Pam Ealey said there are parts to home repair that volunteers can help with, but the skilled work needs contractors. Ealey said it’s more difficult to find an available contractor for things like plumbing and HVAC work.

“We’ll be moving a long on a house and all at once we’re stopped because everyone’s so backed up,” Ealey said. “Between the tornado and then just the construction boom in the community there’s more demand then supply right now.”

Ealey said there are one or two contractors lined up right now, but Habitat for Humanity wants to target 20 to 30 repair projects over the Winter and Spring. Ealey said there are “volunteer friendly” projects, but work could become more extensive.

“We can switch out a toilet and add some grab bars, but when it comes to pulling out a tub to make a roll-in shower tub we’d use a licensed plumber,” Ealey said. “If there’s some out there we would love to have them participate with us.”

Ealey said there is money to pay contractors and plumbers. If a contractor is interested they should reach out to Construction Director Bob Jett.
