Upper Cumberland Regional Airport has a new traffic control plan for the airport to reduce the risk of accidents.
Manager Dean Selby said the airport has made agreements with several aircraft operators to not allow vehicles within 100 feet of an aircraft. Selby said an accident would occur eventually if traffic precautions were not implemented.
“We are kinda modifying the plan we got,” Selby said. “It is defining it a little better. Before, there was nothing in writing and more of a common sense approach. With growth, that become more difficult.”
Selby said the plan will keep all traffic close to the hangars and keep traffic away from the ramps. Airport engineer Richard Rinks said just barely clipping an aircraft can cause up to $300,000 worth of damage.
Selby said no major accidents have occurred with vehicles at the airport in the past.
