U.S. Army Corps Seeks Feedback On Sunset Expansion

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants public feedback on a proposed 135-acre expansion of Sunset Marina at Dale Hollow Lake.

Dale Hollow Lake Manager Crystal Tingle said the expansion would add 55 land acres and 80 acres of water to the marina’s property. She said the marina has proposed a plan for 100 new boat slips, a picnic shelter, upgraded restrooms, and a fishing pier. She said the proposal also creates space to add 10 rental cabins in the coming years.

“It’s just a process that we go through and we’re required to go through as a federal agency to ensure, you know, that the government gives proper consideration for any environmental factors and gets customer input, gets public input in our process,” Tingle said.

Tingle said the applicant is also looking to have a portion of the property rezoned to “high-density recreation.” She said this would allow developments like nature trails and shelters in an area that is primarily used for wildlife management under its current “multiple resource” classification.

The public can comment through May 10. She said a final determination of the project’s viability will be made once all comments have been reviewed and considered.

“We are receiving, like, a broad range of comments,” Tingle said. “And I think we will continue to receive a broad range of comments through May 10.”

Tingle said the proposal also includes improvements to the parking area, like accommodation for 59 boat trailer spaces and paving the existing gravel lot. Additionally, the expansion would change the Plankyard Recreation area from an Army Corps of Engineers-managed space to a long-term lease to Sunset Marina.

She said those seeking additional information on the plans can visit the Dale Hollow Lake Facebook page.
