Tuesday will be the only day for parents to sign their child up for the Clay County Mitten Tree this Christmas.
Due to COVID the signup location for families in need has been moved to the Helping Hands building on Clay County Highway from 8:00 AM until 10:00 AM. Mitten Tree volunteer Donna Haynes said people can give back to kids in need by picking a mitten with a child’s name off a Christmas Tree at two local banks.
“I think the more that we uplift these kids by us giving, it uplifts us that help,” Haynes said. “It also will uplift our kids.”
Haynes said the two locations to pick mittens and get a gift for a kid in need will be at the Bank of Celina and Macon Bank and Trust. Anyone who picks a mitten can drop off their gift at the Clay County Highway Helping Hands on December 16.
“I fill all the mittens out and at each bank here in Celina, we have Citizen’s Bank and Macon Bank and Trust,” Haynes said. “All the mittens will be on their trees for anybody who wants to go in and pick a mitten off of a tree and help a child.”
Haynes said there is only one signup day because of COVID concerns. However, anyone who does sign up will get a number so they can pick up their kids present on December 17.
“It will be a drive-by and they’ll just give us their number,” Haynes said. “We’ll get that number that’s on the packages and we’ll give them their gift for their kids.”
Haynes said the Mitten Tree will take monetary donations to buy presents for any kids who were not selected, if someone wants to help but does not have time to shop. The original location for Mitten Tree signups and drop-offs have been moved from the Clay County Community Center to the Helping Hands Building on Clay County Highway.
