A TBI investigation has been launched after the deadly shooting of a Sewanee man by the Overton County Sheriff’s Office.
District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway requested TBI assistance on the case Monday. The shooting occurred Friday night in the 1600 block of Standing Stone Highway.
Deputies responded to a man brandishing a handgun identified as 42-year-old Jerry Henley. Henley had active warrants and was shot and killed during the arrest attempt.
No officers were hurt during the incident.
TBI agents work independently to determine the series of events leading to the shooting, as well as gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration.
The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with Dunaway.
