State Legislators Want Direct Constituent Input Before Public Safety Special Session Held

State legislators will step back to consider how to move forward with potential firearm legislation and public safety.

Governor Bill Lee announced two weeks ago that the General Assembly would meet in a special session to discuss those topics. He said there is broad agreement that dangerous, unstable individuals who intend to harm themselves or others should not have access to weapons.

State Senator Paul Bailey said members wanted time to return to their districts and hear from constituents directly. He said in Nashville, it is harder to get out of the “fishbowl” and hear from more of the people they represent.

“What we want to do is to be able to take this information we gather from our constituents, create a task force within the legislature, and basically start disseminating a lot of this information,” Bailey said.

Bailey said another want from the legislature is for law enforcement agencies to release the manifesto related to the Covenant School shooting. He said that information would help provide more information to legislators about how to move forward.

Bailey said Governor Lee has not yet set a date to have a special called session on this topic.
