Former Jackson County Clerk Amanda Stafford has been released from the Jackson County Jail to a drug rehabilitation facility.
Assistant District Attorney Ian Bratton said Stafford was arrested for a probation violation on July 2 for a drug charge.
“The violation basis, I believe, was prescription pill use,” Bratton said. “It was something she didn’t have a prescription for, though.”
Bratton said Stafford’s attorney successfully petitioned 15th Judicial District Criminal Judge Brody Kane to release Stafford to a rehab facility pending her next court date. She is scheduled to go in front of the court on August 17.
“She will have her violation reviewed by Judge Kane,” Bratton said. “At which point he will decided whether he will find her in full violation, violate her in part, or to continue, for instance, a rehab program.”
Stafford pleaded guilty in May to running a lapping scheme in the Jackson County Clerk’s office, defrauding the county of over $25,000. She was sentenced to two years probation and ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution.
Stafford resigned her office earlier in May after a lengthy investigation by the Comptroller’s Office and the Tennessee Department of Revenue. That investigation found that Stafford had stolen most of the funds between May 2018 and December 2019.
