Sparta’s Lester Flatt Celebration Hosting Several Performances And Firework Show

One of the biggest events in the city of Sparta returns this Saturday.

The Lester Flatt Celebration at Liberty Square begins at 12:45. Mayor Jeff Young said Sparta is the home town of the Bluegrass legend. Young said the annul event keeps the music tradition alive.

“Bluegrass has always just been a big part of the culture in the city of Sparta,” Young said. “We’ve been fortunate enough to have several legendary bluegrass musicians live in Sparta. Of course, we have Lester Flatt and several others.”

Young said the city has five performances planned starring Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out, Blake Williams and others. Young said the day will conclude with a firework display at 7:00 p.m.

“Probably have a couple different food vendors there,” Young said. “There will be probably in the neighborhood of 100 different vendors set up. We’ll have a car cruise-in. Last year, we had about 100 cars show up for you to look at. Fire Trucks there for the kids to look at. There’s just all kinds of fun.”

Young said Saturday is a great day to come out and visit with friends and family. Young said the celebration is free to attend. Young said all a person needs to bring is a smile and a desire to hear some good music.

“Cities all across the Upper Cumberland, most cities have one event that is special to them, and this is the one for us,” Young said. “Bluegrass has a history and is special for us in Sparta. City Staff, the mayor and the board we all work hard year-long, but on this day we’re going to have fun.”

Young said performances will be in front of the historic Oldham Theater in downtown. Young said several blocks around town will be closed to accommodate event goers. Young said seating will be available, but a lawn chair is encouraged.
