The city of Sparta considering potential properties for a park, greenway trail, and kayak dock.
Mayor Jerry Lowery said while it is far too early to know what exactly a new space would look like, he is excited about the new possibility. Lowery said he is specifically interested examining one property that he believes might be a good fit.
“There’s a lot of hoops to jump through and things like that,” Lowery said. “But we’ll see. And the property may be gone before we even get a chance to do it, but I just want to start that process, and yeah, it’s really exciting. So we’re looking at something that would be really big for the city of Sparta.”
Lowery said the city has many resources that it could use for parks and recreation areas, citing the river as one area the city needs to do more with. Lowery got approval from the Board of Aldermen last week to begin preliminary talks.
Lowery said he plans to bring the Board of Aldermen to the property and have them look at the opportunities the area could provide.
There had been some discussions last year about the city and county working together to expand recreational resources in White County.
