Sparta Revamps Downtown Area With New Aesthetics

Sparta adding some new aesthetics downtown to beautify the square for the summer season.

Mayor Jeff Young said city workers have installed accent lighting on trees and new banners for decorative light poles in the downtown area.

“Our downtown square is something that we are very very proud of,” Young said. “We’ve been revamping the downtown square this spring already. Trying to make a great atmosphere that people want to come to and hang out.”

Young said the city also has some new bench seating in the pipeline. Young said concrete has been poured for a new patio-type area near the square.

“We’re trying to make it to where people want to visit Sparta,” Young said. “They’re doing some new landscaping. The banners we worked with a design company to get those done. They read ‘welcome to historic downtown Sparta, Bluegrass, USA.’ It’s really going to make downtown pop for us.”

Young said the investment in the decorations go a long way in keeping a vibrant downtown. Young said not only does it bring people in for events but businesses also notice.

Young said when he first entered office some three years ago, the square had several empty buildings. Through a downtown revitalization program, Young said several new businesses have now opened.
