Sparta approved an ordinance cutting food truck vendor fees in half during its Thursday meeting.
With the change, food truck vendors will be assessed a $25 charge for a one day permit to $250 for a one year permit. Sparta Green Market Manager Amanda Dunsmore said Sparta is moving the right direction on food trucks.
“I just wanted to extend my gratitude to the board and to Mr. Hennessee and our city attorney,” Dunsmore said. “For the prompt attention for the food truck issue and I think we’ve come to a good solution. So I’m looking forward to a good season.”
Alderman Jerry Lowery did ask why one-day permits could only be issued to a vendor twice. Sparta Mayor Jeff Young said it both encourages vendors to pursue a long-term permit and allows vendors to see how they perform before making a long-term commitment.
City Administrator Brad Hennessee said the ordinance was similar to a model he found in Knoxville. Young had said during a March Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting that the city’s system for food trucks was outdated and needed to compete with other communities
