Sparta Homeless Shelter Offering Shopping Spree

Seeds of Hope in Sparta is raising money in hopes of securing a permanent location for its Coldest Nights Shelter.

Someone can win a three-minute shopping spree at Sparta’s Save-A-Lot store.

Executive Director Tina Lomax said the goal is $15,000. Lomax said getting a permanent location is about being able to offer more than a place to stay when temperatures drop below 35 degrees.

“We’ve grown so much that we’re needing to add employees,” Lomax said. “We want to have a permanent building because, kind of the homeless shelter’s kind of homeless. We’re looking to get a more permanent location to where the services that we offer can be done on a regular basis.”

For those who do participate in fundraising, the prize is a three minute shopping spree at Sparta’s Save-A-Lot. Lomax said there is information on Seeds of Hopes Facebook page about where to buy tickets to get entered into the grand prize drawing.

“On March 6 live on our Facebook page we will do the drawing for who wins the shopping spree,” Lomax said. “The shopping spree will be done March 13 at 9:00 AM. We will call you and let you know if you won, but of course the more tickets you purchase, the more chances you have to win.”

Lomax said Seeds of Hope is considering a few different locations, but nothing definite without the funding. She said getting a permanent location will help everyone in the community.

“If we can get them serviced and get them back to being self sufficient, we will see a lot of crime, a lot of the use of the emergency departments,” Lomax said. “Things like that, the health care, the stuff that really costs the public a lot for somebody to be homeless. We’ll see all of that go down.”

Lomax said the Coldest Nights Shelter uses different churches right now for its shelter. The shopping spree winner will be allowed to put anything in their shopping cart, other than tobacco or alcohol.
