T-DOT has awarded Sparta a $950,000 multimodal access grant to improve sidewalks along Spring Street.
Mayor Jeff Young said new sidewalk will stretch from Bockman Way to Turntable Road.
“This project does take a long time,” Young said. “We’ve been granted the funds. The paperwork process I’ve got a stack of documents we’ll have to sign to get everything in motion, but this is very very good news.”
Young said once T-DOT approves the project proposal, engineering will begin. Then, Sparta can bid out to contractors. Young said the city used the same grant a few years to install sidewalks on the west side of town.
“We saw what kind of benefit that we got with our city with that,” Young said.
Young said the total project will come out to one million dollars after Sparta includes a $50,000 match. Young said walkways will be ADA compliant with some crosswalks along the way.
