Sparta conducting a parks cleanup effort Monday to get city facilities ready for the spring season.
Mayor Jeff Young said the city has partnered with the Bledsoe County Prison inmate crews to complete the work.
“Now that the COVID restrictions are softening just a little bit, we got a six-man crew that’s going to be here the next period of a couple of weeks,” Young said. “We want to do a big cleanup effort at North Carter Street, South Carter Street and clear our brush and overgrowth at the river banks.”
Young said inmates will be in town for about two weeks, starting on the West side of Carter Street. Young said several dead trees, tires and debris need to be picked up along the Calfkiller River.
“If they get those things done that I mention, we’ll move them over to the east side of the river,” Young said. “I think they’ll be able to get at least get some of that done in the two-week period that they’re here.”
Young said inmates will also try to paint over graffiti on the Carter Street Bridge if time permits. Young said he has worked with Representative Paul Sherrel the past several years to start bringing inmates in to clean the area.
“It should make a great improvement for the park system in the upcoming spring,” Young said.
