The city of Sparta applied for a state grant to improve the sidewalks within the city.
Mayor Jeff Young said the grant will allow the city to build new pedestrian sidewalks from Bockman Way up Spring Street north to the hospital.
“The whole purpose is not just to make the community look good, but it is to provide a safe, happy and healthy walking environment for people,” Young said. “There are a lot of folks that are impaired that need extra space. This will provide them a safe walking area.”
Young said the city received the grant a few years ago and installed sidewalks for the west side of Sparta. TDOT’s Multimodal Access Grant is worth up to $1 million dollars with a 10% match from the city.
