Smithville Looking Toward Grants for Sewer Rehab

Smithville City Council will consider applying for grant funding to cover costs for an upcoming sewer rehabilitation project.

Mayor Josh Miller said the city will likely apply for nearly $400,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to cover expenses.

“It’s outdated. The infrastructure is just getting old,” Miller said. “When you’re dealing with sewer and water, even $400,000 doesn’t go that far. So it will be used for what is needed most as far as sewer goes.”

Miller said a timeline has not been set for the project as it could be a few months before the city hears back from state officials on the grant.

“We probably won’t know anything until the fall,” Miller said. “We’ll keep our fingers crossed and we’ll probably be calling on our state representative and our state senator and see if they can help in getting this grant because there’s a great need for it.”

Smithville’s City Council will consider the application during Monday’s council meeting beginning at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
