Sheriff Farris Warns Commission About Growing Inmate Medical Costs

The growing cost to provide medical care for Putnam County inmates causing budget concerns for Putnam County Sheriff Eddie Farris.

Farris updated the county commission on the current finances. Farris said last year, the department sent 44 inmates to the hospital. This year, 42 inmates have already received medical care with five months left in the budget.

“We are not behind on our money, but we are very close with five months to go,” Farris said. “So, I just wanted to report to you that it will be a continuing issues.”

Farris said the county pays about $1.6 million a year for contracted medical services. Farris said it pays for an on-staff licensed practical nurse, registered nurse and doctor. According to Farris, the county saved more than $50,000 in the line item last year but that could change this fiscal year.

Farris shared examples as to why the cost for medical care has increased. Farris said the jail has four pregnant inmates and another on dialysis.
