Roane State Registering Middle Schoolers For Summer STEM Camp

Roane State Community College Cumberland Campus is registering students currently enrolled in middle school for summer STEM Camp sponsored by Verizon.

Director of Cumberland Business Incubator Holly Hanson said the STEM program gives all youth technology experience to grow into better technicians and employees.

Hanson said the STEM program offers campers five different classes each day including 3-D Printing, Design Thinking, Augmented and Virtual Reality with CoScene, Coding with Robots and AI, and Electronics and Coding with Micro-Bit. Hanson said campers also learn public speaking.

“The fear of public speaking is one of the biggest things for almost all of us,” Hanson said. “So we give the campers opportunities in safe small groups to stand in front and talk about what they have designed or what they’ve developed. So by the end of camp, they have no fear.

Hanson said the camp had developed over time from the Rural Girls program. She said now it is open to boys and all campers are welcome.

Hanson said in today’s camp an ultimate goal is to see the girls stepping forward rather than back when the boys step forward with technology.

“So we like to see the girls blossom, be comfortable, and be there right up front with the boys,” Hanson said.

Hanson said if this sounds different from your recollections of summer camp it’s because they are trying to keep kids on the leading edge.

The dates for the Cumberland STEM Camp are July 10th through July 27th, Monday through Thursday (no Fridays) for 3 weeks, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no cost to attend. No prior knowledge or experience is required. All students currently in 5th – 7th grade range are welcome.
