Rezoning Request Approved For Old Housing Property

The Cookeville City Council has approved a rezoning request for nearly 14-acres of property at Willow Avenue, Jackson Street, Polly Drive and West Stevens Street.

City Planning Director James Mills said the old public housing property will now be zoned general commercial instead of regional commercial. Mills said the rezoning allows for a reduction in setbacks.

“The rezoning would allow them an additional 20-feet of land area. As you can see, about half of this property is in a flood plain,”Mills said. “The rezoning wold allow them to have a greater envelope for development and we still expect this property yo be developed for commercial purposes.”

City officials haven’t received official plans for what might be developed. The Highlands Residential Services sold the property to Neil Patel for $3.6 million about two years ago.

2nd reading approval of the rezoning request is still needed.
