Rezoning Approved For Property At Cookeville’s West Broad & Crescent

Cookeville City Council voted to rezone some four acres off West Broad Street to local commercial Thursday night.

The four acres on Crescent Drive are located adjacent to the former Bob’s Body Shop property that has been cleared in recent months. Community Development Director Jon Ward said the land currently has two different zones and the rezoning would provide consistency.

The planning commission approved the rezoning. Ward said the water department said the property could contain up to 70 units. The projected use for the land is multi-family housing.

Council also approved the purchase of a 55-foot bucket truck for the Cookeville Electric Department. Director Carl Haney said the department had tried to purchase a similar truck earlier in the fiscal year, but the wait time was several years. This truck will be available immediately and is roughly $38,000 cheaper.

Cookeville Police will move forward the continuation of its lease on four police motorcycles. Chief Randy Evans said the lease began six years ago. A new three-year contract for elevator maintenance at the new police headquarters received approval.

Council also approved on final reading the rezoning of newly annexed land at Hawkins Crawford Road and Tennessee Avenue. The land will be zoned general commercial.

The city declared a right of way off Holly Avenue as surplus property. The undeveloped right of way includes some .04 acres off Fourth Street. It was requested by land owner Peter Metts. No members of the public spoke on the issue.
