Registration is open for Tai Chi classes at the Cane Creek Park Recreation Center.
Instructor Nikki Desch said the martial art coordinates physical movements with breathing to achieve inner calm and peace.
“Tai Chi is a very low impact exercise mainly from China,” Desch said. “All of our movements are very slow, and it helps with your balance, coordination, overall health, strengthening and your legs.”
Tai Chi is often described as, “Meditation in Motion,” due to the calculated stretches and movements. Desch said the training can be accomplished by all ages.
“The movements are like in meditation,” Desch said. “It is very slow, and we breath with our movements, so that way it is not hard on the body. It looks like you are meditating, but you are moving in slow motion.”
The cost is is $30 per six-week session and last until mid-May, but Desch said your first class visit is free.
“Tai Chi classes are held here at Cookeville Leisure Service,” Desch said. “We have a Tuesday at 5:30 class, Thursday at 11:30 a.m.”
There is also a Friday class at 10:00 a.m. Desch said each class lasts for about one hour.
