Rains Foundation Golf Tournament This Saturday

After missing last year’s tournament due to COVID, the annual Rains Foundation Golf Tournament returns to Cookeville at the Golden Eagles Golf Course on Saturday.

Wayne Cravens, a member of the board of the Rains Foundation, said he hopes the community will come out to raise money for scholarships that help students in the Upper Cumberland receive a higher educations.

“The Rains Foundation was established as a vehicle to help fund college expenses for deserving folks from the counties of Putnam, Fentress, Pickett, Cumberland and Morgan,” said Cravens.

Over the tournaments 16 year history, Cravens said they’ve raised $300,000 of scholarships to 168 students, and that they are looking to expand that in the years ahead. Recently, they’ve made a switch in components that give all funding to scholarships for students at Tennessee Tech.

“Tech is a direct beneficiary of the Foundation. The golf tournament is the primary funding mechanism in addition to gifts from the family and other individuals for those scholarships,” said Cravens.

Cravens said this tournament puts the “fun” in “fundraiser,” as they’ll have food, games, and other fun activities to participate in. He said right now there are 44 teams with 176 golfers registered, but he hopes to have a full tournament to benefit worthy students.

“Our hope is that we continue with the work that Steve started to benefit and help promote higher education in the Upper Cumberland, and in doing so also help Tennessee Tech, and we want people to have fun,” said Cravens.

Registration for the tournament is still open, with tee times at 7:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
