Quilt Festival To Feature Historic White Plains Home

The White Plains Home in Algood will be showcased during the annual Upper Cumberland Quilt Festival next month.

Coordinator John Allen said he historic home will be one of several quilt display stops during the three day event.

“The city of Algood is working hard to get it cleaned up and ready,” Allen said. “We will not have the entire house on display, but there will be at least two or three rooms that people will be able to see.”

Algood City Administrator Keith Morrison said planning has begun on how the home will be used during the festival and what it will look like.

The Algood City Council gave approval to purchase the White Plains home in April for $250,000

The antebellum home has a unique history as Putnam County’s earliest center of commerce, its first seat of government and an important stop along the Old Walton Road. In 2009 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

City officials began working with historians and the Upper Cumberland Development District in July on several plans for renovations.

Morrison said the city needs to protect the home while still making it accessible to the public.

“So one of the key factors for us upfront is going to be securing the outside of the home from weather elements and making sure it can withstand the weather first,” Morrison said. “And then next, we will work on parking and restrooms and access to the home.”

Right now, crews are working to clean up the yard, shrubs and adjacent field in preparations for next month’s festival. Cleaning is also taking place inside the home, Morrison said.

The Upper Cumberland Quilt Festival will take lace September 20-22 at a total of seven locations in Algood.
