Putnam Planning Rescinds County Road Recommendation

The Putnam County Planning Commission rescinded a recommendation to accept a new county road during its Tuesday meeting.

Planning Director Kevin Rush said parts of Anna Maria Lane’s gravel were washed out by heavy rains after the commission suggested adding the street to the county list in February. Rush said he spoke with Road Supervisor Randy Jones and they agreed the road should not be added until it is fixed and adjusted to prevent the damage from happening again.

“The ditches washed out, filled with silt,” Rush said. “The gravel washed out from the shoulder. The structural integrity of the road, I don’t think, was ever in danger, but it washed out the – some of the shoulder stone and we just want to get that addressed before it becomes a county road.”

Rush said the road would serve as the main street of the Cane Creek subdivision off of Buffalo Valley Road between Baxter and Cookeville. He said the developer is already working to address the problem.

“He’s already come back in and put some rock down,” Rush said. “And he said he had a plan to address the issue with the drainage.”

Rush said the commission would continue to hold onto the letter of credit for the project until the road is repaired.

“There’s some areas of the banks along the ditch that you can see that they’ve got some little gullies that have – have sort of washed out,” Rush said. “And they’ll have to have a little grade work to smooth out, and probably some topsoil.”

In other business, the planning commission approved two subdivision plats: one turning three lots on Stamps Shady Grove Road into two lots totaling 4.46 acres, and another establishing a new 1.98-acre lot on Verble Sherrell Road.
