Putnam Offering Summer Childcare

Putnam County Schools is offering childcare over summer break through its School Age Care Program.

SAC Program Coordinator Krista Hamilton said enrollment is limited this summer because of COVID-19.

“We’ll be limiting our group numbers,” Hamilton said. “We’ll have a maximum of nine students per group with one caregiver, and we’ll have the same groups of kids together each day. Of course, we are really amping up sanitizing and cleaning between rotations.”

Summer SAC begins June 1 at Prescott Elementary School in Cookeville. The deadline to register is Friday. Hamilton said the program is only enrolling students that attended SAC during the school year.

“Families that need full-time care for the whole summer will get first priority,” Hamilton said. “Then, we can fill in spots for kids that may just need 2 or 3 day a week or just a few weeks. We’ll try to work those families together to fill those spots.”

Tuition rates begin at $95 dollars a week or $22.50 per day for one child. Hamilton said the SAC program provides the students with learning and exercise opportunities.

“We’ll rotate through centers,” Hamilton said. “We have a STEM rotation, so they will get to do science activities and get messy. We’ll have a rotation for reading and journaling. They’ll read stories, create stories, and draw pictures to go with the stories. Of course, they will have time to play in the gym and have recess time.”

Although Putnam County plans to hold Summer SAC, Hamilton said that if COVID-19 cases go up across the state, there is a chance the program could be closed by order of Governor Bill Lee or by local health officials.
