Putnam Moving Veterans Memorial To Other Side Of Courthouse

The Putnam County Veterans Memorial at the courthouse will be moved to the southeast corner of the building.

Mayor Randy Porter said the current location posed safety issues due to the proximity of Jefferson Avenue.

“These veterans some of them are elderly and hard to get around were having to stand out on the sidewalk right there almost in the edge of traffic to look at the wall,” Porter said. “It was becoming dangerous. So, we’re going to move it up there, so they’ll have a place to go.”

Porter said the existing veterans wall will move to the new area that will have an eternal flame, a small pavilion, benches and flags of each military branch. Porter said concrete work for the new location has been completed.

“Wheel chair access and everything,” Porter said. “We’re hoping to have it done in the next month or so.”

Porter said the goal is to have the project completed by Memorial Day to have a dedication. Porter said tree roots also limited further building at the current memorial.

Porter said the county partnered with Cookeville to establish a gas line for the flame. Porter said it has already been installed.
