Putnam Master Gardeners Plant Sale Blooms Saturday

The Putnam County Master Gardeners will hold their 11th annual plant sale Saturday at the Putnam County Fairgrounds .

Gardener Cathy Bressler said the group has harvested a slew of vegetables, flowers, and herbs that will be up for sale. She said perennial flowers make up the bulk of the plants in stock. The money raised by the sale will fund projects like a scholarship for a Tennessee Tech agriculture student and several 4-H programs focused on benefitting the youth.

“There’s so much need for gardens now and for expertise in this department,” Bressler said. “So I think we all feel very strong about giving these scholarships to the youth to keep them educated.”

Bressler said even with some cold and rainy conditions, the greenhouse provided conditions for incredible growth over the past few months. She said, in particular, tomatoes and peppers have taken off and she is excited to put the colorful veggies on dinner tabled throughout Putnam County.

The event takes place Saturday from 8:00am-2:00pm

“We keep up the farmers market,” Bressler said. “And that takes money to buy the plants and make areas of the community look pretty. The depot, and all these different little areas of our downtown area to keep those up.”

She said at the end of the sale, the gardeners donate leftover plants to local schools to help supplement the vegetation already thriving in their gardens and greenhouses. She said she hopes to see a big turnout at the fairgrounds on Saturday and offered a reminder that carts and wagons will be available to help people transport plants to their vehicles.

“We also have herbs and all types of vegetables,” Bressler said. “Tomatoes, peppers, sweet peppers, hot peppers, and I’m going to say that’s probably the bulk of it, but there are some other delightful surprises over there too.”
