The Putnam County Schools got positive budget news from the state Thursday night.
Director of Schools Corby King said the state’s estimated BEP payment to Putnam County will increase by some $219,000. That reduces the school system’s deficit for the next fiscal year to some $887,000. The deficit will be covered by the system’s fund balance, including money saved during the spring school closing.
The School Board approved sending the revised budget to county commissioners for approval. King said during recent conversations with County Mayor Randy Porter, budget discussions are still several weeks away. King said the county wants to wait as late as possible to assess the revenue situation related to COVID-19.
The county must pass a new budget by the end of July.
The school board also approved the purchase of 800 digital thermometers and 3,000 cloth face masks for the reopening of school this fall. The total cost stands at $34,200, to be reimbursed by CARES Act Funds.
