Putnam County Juneteenth Food Drive This Week

Putnam County Democratic Party, Cookeville-Putnam NAACP, and Helping Hands of Putnam County have teamed up for a Juneteenth food drive this week.

Helping Hands will be taking donations of canned food goods through Friday. Helping Hands of Putnam County Director Becca Duncan said the food drive will help them donate more to families in need.

“It just makes it where its easier for us to provide more,” Duncan said. “They can only come once every 60 days, so we try to give them a large amount of food to be able to use since they can’t come more than that.”

Duncan said the food drive helps families in need as the economy has hurt some families financially in Putnam County. Helping Hands requests that non-perishable foods be donated.

“Just with the economy and the way that it is,” Duncan said. “We are supported here by a large amount of individuals and churches, and that kind of thing, but anything that we can get separate over and above the financial help then frees up the funds that we are getting so that we can help more on the rental assistance and electric and those kinds of things.”

Duncan said the partnership will figure something out as they face difficulties receiving donations due to Cedar Street parking being eliminated for bicycle lanes.

“When they are ready to donate something they make sure that we get it,” Duncan said. “We do have a van that if I need to I can go down and park someplace else but they have not asked for that.”

A list of other items they need are Soup, Peanut Butter Canned meats, tuna, salmon, Diapers size 4 and larger, Baby wipes, Tampons, and Powdered Laundry Detergent. Donations can be dropped off at the PCDP Office, 111 North Cedar, Cookeville, TN this week through Friday, June 21, 11 AM to 6 PM and Saturday, June 22, 2024, from 9 AM to 1 PM.
