Putnam County anticipates the population to have increased by 7,000 once final census numbers are released.
Mayor Randy Porter said the total tally should come sometime September.
“The census numbers are actually going to be outdated by the time we get them, because we have so many people moving here,” Porter said. “Our estimates that I am getting are that we’re getting about 3,400 to 3,500 hundred a people a year is moving here right now.”
From 2010 to 2019, the county only saw the population grow by 6,000, according to Porter. Porter said with such rapid increase and final numbers coming out delayed, the turnaround for redistricting will be a challenge.
“We’re going to have to do some redistricting, and that is a short time frame we got to do that in,” Porter said. “We have to have it done by the May election.”
Porter said housing and construction has been booming, as well. Porter said 227 new homes have been built in the county in the past year.
