A 30 percent increase in household garbage over the past three years has caused Putnam County to start planning a transfer station expansion.
Mayor Randy Porter said engineers have been at the South Jefferson Avenue location checking the feasibility of an on-site expansion.
“The transfer station, it’s getting to the point it can’t handle the daily load, which almost is 100 ton a day of household garbage that goes through the transfer station.” Porter said. “So, we’re in the planning stage right now.”
Porter said a combination of increased population, construction and online orders has contributed to the increase in trash. Porter said the project is a part of the county’s five-year plan but is not budgeted for at this time.
“The commission knows about it and knows that we’re going to have to do something,” Porter said. “So my guess is with the amount of building going on in our county, it’s hard to find contractors to build stuff. It’ll probably be something that we would wind up doing next fiscal year once we got the drawings and everything done.”
Porter said the site is being surveyed to see if the location has enough space for the expansion. Porter said the county would consider other options if room is not there.
