Putnam County will celebrate the magic of Christmas this year with its first-ever Christmas on the Square celebration Saturday.
The event will consist of games, kids activities, carolers, train rides, and an opportunity to get a picture with Santa Claus. The evening concludes with the lighting of the Christmas tree. Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter said the county wanted to provide a family-friendly Christmas event.
“I hear from our citizens all the time that they want family-friendly events put on so they can have something to bring the kids out to,” Porter said. “So we thought what a great idea it would be to have Christmas on the Square.”
Porter said he had hoped to implement the event a few years ago but the tornado and COVID led to the event being put off. Porter said the event will be a great way to kick off the Christmas season.
“We are doing this in conjunction with Shop Local where all our local merchants around the square and down on the west side are going to be participating and so go out and support them,” Porter said. “Shop local, bring the kids out, and have a good time. We are going to light the tree. We are going to light the lights around the square and we are going to kick off the Christmas season in a good way in Putnam County.”
Porter said since he became mayor 10 years ago he has heard the citizens wanting more family-friendly events throughout the year.
“We got the 4th of July Festivities and the city does the lighting of the Christmas tree in Dogwood Park and we got Fall Fun Fest,” Porter said. “So we thought we needed another event to be able to allow the kids to come out, It’s a free event and enjoy themselves and have a good time with their family.”
The Christmas at the Square celebration will run from 2pm-5pm on Saturday, November 30th. The event is free for people of all ages.
