From regular season finales to overnight snowstorms, this week has brought with it tons of questions for Upper Cumberland basketball.
The biggest question among some will be answered tonight: will their season continue? Others kept their seasons alive before the snow and will look to advance to championship games next week.
GIRLS:
Clay battles Clarkrange. In one of the few matchups between two Upper Cumberland teams, both teams will see their seasons continue regardless of the result. Clay enters play having won five straight games, as well as sweeping the regular season series against Clarkrange. The Lady Buffaloes of Clarkrange enter the district tournament having broken their three game losing streak on February 10th against Stone Memorial.
Pickett County battles Gordonsville in the other District 7A Semifinal. The semifinal contest sees a rematch between the two teams, as both ended their regular seasons against each other on February 11th, with Pickett coming out on top 95-44. Gordonsville lost the season series to Pickett, dropping both games; they enter having lost their last two to close their regular season.
Cumberland battles DeKalb in an elimination game. The Lady Jets missed an opportunity to possess a first round bye this season and will look to battle the number two seed in Upperman Friday night with a win. DeKalb looks for their first district win of the season to advance to regional tournament play.
Livingston faces off with Stone Memorial in an elimination game. Livingston looks for a bounce back after losing to White County Friday night. Stone seeks a different outcome from the regular season, where they lost to Livingston in both games by double digits.
Jackson County faces York in the District 5AA Semifinals. York defeated Monterey Tuesday afternoon to keep their season going. They look to head to the championship game against Jackson County, who defeated Watertown on the road to conclude their regular season Friday night.
Warren County faces undefeated Coffee County Saturday night. Warren defeated Spring Hill after falling behind in the first half to keep their season alive Tuesday night. They are tasked with defeating a Coffee County team who stands at 27-0 entering tournament play.
BOYS:
Clay battles Gordonsville in the District 7A Semifinals. Both teams played tight contests in their matchups this season, with each team winning one game. The Bulldogs of Clay County look to continue their high scoring games this season with their last four wins seeing Clay score at least 73 points in each game. Gordonsville enters play 16-10.
Clarkrange faces Pickett. Clarkrange kept their season going by eliminating Red Boiling Springs Tuesday night. Pickett comes in looking to advance to the final by avenging their end-of-season loss to Gordonsville on the road February 11th.
Cumberland faces Livingston in an elimination game. Livingston defeated Cumberland in both regular season games. Both teams look to keep their seasons alive as Cumberland enters tournament play losing eight of their last ten, while Livingston enters having dropped three of their last four.
Sparta faces DeKalb Thursday night with both teams’ seasons on the line. DeKalb will look for their second district win this season, with their first happening against Cumberland County February 4th. White County defeated Livingston Friday night and has won five of their last six entering play.
Jackson County battles Watertown. The two teams battle for the second time in nine days. Jackson County won the matchup on February 13th and enters riding a 12-game win streak. Watertown advanced to the semifinals after eliminating Monterey Tuesday night.
York faces off against Smith County in the District 5AA semifinals. The two teams faced off last Thursday, with Smith County winning on the road 63-56. York’s only three wins this season occurred against district opponents. They hope to defeat a Smith County team having won three of their last four games.
Van Buren faces off with Whitwell Saturday afternoon in the District 6A Semifinal. Van Buren finished second out of three teams in their district this season and will face a Whitwell team in search of their first win this season. The winner faces South Pittsburg for the championship.
