Putnam County Mayor Randy Porter said a $31 million bond capacity for the school system could be feasible in the future.
Porter said the school system is potentially looking at coming up around 2025 or 2026 to ask for an additional bond. He said that is about when the county should have paid off some of its older bonds, freeing up some of its capacity.
“If everything keeps going like it is,” Porter said. “We don’t have anything major coming up as far as I know right now other than the transfer station that we have to renovate this coming year. But we’re paying cash for that, so as far as doing any bonds in the next few years I don’t know of anything so we should be in good shape by the time those years roll around.”
Porter said the county currently is at its bond capacity with the jail project and the new Park View School project. He said they could do a smaller project if needed, but nothing of that magnitude.
Porter said from what he understands, the school would potentially use those funds to renovate the current Park View School. He said that would open the potential to use that building as a Pre-K facility if the school system chose to do so.
“And then doing an addition on Northeast and Cane Creek schools, and maybe doing something with White Plains and the VITAL program and doing all that together in one bond,” Porter said. “And so we’ll be looking at that as we get on up after they get their other projects done into that 25/26 budget year. We should be at a place then to be able to do another bond without any tax increase.”
