The Clay County School System has purchased a new portable classroom to replace its aging facility at Celina Elementary School.
Director of Schools Matt Eldridge said the $124,000 price tag was covered by COVID funds.
“It’s getting old, and it is showing wear and they wanted to buy one before the other had any safety issues come up,” Eldridge said. “So, they decided to purchase one from a Vanguard company, and it is going to be two classroom and have a couple of restrooms in it.”
Eldridge said the extra capacity will be used for an art and music class. Eldridge said the Board of Education explored renovating the existing portable, but it was not worth extending the use.
“They had talked about it, and we brought in a few photos of the other and showed the wear,” Eldridge said. “If we spent the money to upgrade the other one to keep it relevant for the five or six years, it would probably be a waste of money, because we are still going to have to get read of it versus what we would invest in this one.”
Eldridge said the purchase is a small portion of the $1.4 million of the second round of COVID funds. Eldridge said plans are not official, but the board is exploring using the remainder of funds for technology and building extensions on schools.
