Pickett Historical Society To Distinguish Historical Buildings

The Pickett County Historical Society will launch a plaque program to recognize historical buildings.

The Campbell Cabin will be the first to receive the honor this Saturday.

County Historian Richard Pierce said the plaque will distinguish the cabin’s name and year it was built.

“Something the historical society is doing is recognizing old buildings,” Pierce said. “It was in the Campbell family for about 80 something years. Then, the Benson’s bought it. It has been in their family for several years now.”

Pierce said civil war reenactors will be present for the unveiling of the plaque. The cabin was built in 1830 at the Chanute community. Pierce said the historical buildings in Pickett County are slowly disappearing.

“It is about thirty by twenty or twenty-five,” Pierce said. “I do not know how many acres go with the property. But, the residents who own live on the property. It is owned by James Benson and his wife.”
