Pickett Getting Closer To Restoring County’s Oldest Log Cabin

Pickett County Chamber of Commerce about halfway completed with the restoration of the oldest log cabin in the county.

Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Billy Robbins said the county has wanted to turn the 1830s cabin into an attraction for some time. He said it was a $25,000 ThreeStar grant and additional help from the Ammonett family that made it possible.

“We had to redo the chimney, it was a little more extensive than we thought when we took the cabin a part,” Robbins said. “Then we’re in the process of doing the main foundation. And once we’re done with that, we’ll do the restacking of the logs in the main log home.”

Robbins said the goal is that when the work is fully complete, they will be able to create an actual museum based in the home. He said they will have a period-accurate home with associated memorabilia inside.

Robbins said there has been a lot of local interest in the project. He said there have been individuals working to not only aid in the home’s restoration but grow the project into an entire living village.

“Have the home, a blacksmith shop that we have stored away, and then have more outbuildings to create a living village,” Robbins said. “Just make it a tourism attraction. It will be a nice place to visit.”
