Pickett County High Improvements Set To Begin

Pickett County High School is in the process of multiple renovations this summer.

The Board of Education approved bids for the parking lot paving and ceiling replacement project. Quality Asphalt and Sealing Incorporated won the bid as the sole bidder at $29,545. Director of Schools Diane Elder said the parking lot will be numbered, striped and sealed.

“We are excited about the bid winner,” Elder said. “He seems very knowledgeable, and we are ready to get our ceiling and parking lot looking nice again.”

Pickett County High School installed a new security buzz in system with cameras for all doors. Elder said the new security system will allow students to transition between classes smoothly and increase safety.

“We are excited,” Elder said. “Of course you can tell, our high school has four different buildings. It is hard to keep those buildings locked down and have our students go through classes as a normal day.”

Elder said someone will operate the doors at all times while school is in session. The school also laid a new concrete handicap accessible entrance to the high school. Other renovations include repainting and replacements of some doors.

“The building was built in 1962, so it is getting to be rather old,” Elder said. “At this point, we can not afford to build a new school, so we have to take care of what we have.”

Elder said all the projects are expected to be completed by the beginning of school.
