Pickett CCC Memorial State Park adding two new features to its ninth annual Christmas in the Park event Saturday.
Park Ranger Camron Martin said the event will have live Christmas music from the Rugby Cornet Band, a historical brass band. Martin said the park hosts the free event each year to draw in people who have not been there before.
“We really appreciate our guests at the park here every year,” Martin said. “We have people come visit the park from all over, and we just like to share Pickett State Park to the public. We just like to tell Pickett State Park’s story. Of course, we not only love Christmas, we love interacting with the public and we love sharing events.”
Martin said the other new piece of the event is the letters from Santa, where children who write letters to Santa during the event can share their address and get a response from him in the mail. He said the event will still have its older activities including a visit from Santa, a lantern hike to Crystal Falls, and kids’ crafts.
Martin said the event will go from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.
“People will just come out to the park before the event while it’s still daylight and check out some of our short trails, or maybe the Hazard Cave, or drive down by the picnic area and have lunch outside at one of our picnic tables,” Martin said.
Martin said the event will be held at the Group Camp Dining Hall and refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Pickett State Park.
“I’ve been a ranger here at Pickett for 16 years,” Martin said. “We’ve been doing this particular event since 2015 I believe was the first year. Now, they did previous Christmas in the Park events prior to my arrival to Pickett State Park, but this particular event we’ve been doing since 2015.”
