PCSS To Install Air Quality Testers To Check For Gas Leaks, Vaping

Putnam County School System to purchase 22 air quality testers for middle and high schools across the district.

PCSS Deputy Director Tim Martin said the installation will take place this summer.

“So that will give us an alarm if there was a gas leak if something like that happened or something else was in the air,” Martin said. “It also has the added benefit of detecting vape smoke so hopefully we can put those in some places and it will help us mitigate that issue a little bit.”

Martin said Putnam County middle schools and high schools do have to deal with vaping issues on occasion. The purchase will cost some $36,400 using funds from the Epidemiology & Laboratory Capacity Grant.

Martin said the testers work similarly to a regular smoke alarm. He said the installation should be relatively swift and easy to undertake.

“It’ll just be a matter of being able to install those,” Martin said. “But like I said it’s like putting in a smoke detector. They don’t have to be connected to a lot of special stuff. Of course, we just now approved the purchase so hopefully we can have those installed if not before school starts then shortly after. ”

Martin said depending on some funds, they may place a few at selected elementary schools as well.
