Overton Schools Kicking Off Pre-K Registration Thursday

Overton County Schools will open early registration for the system’s Pre-K Program with a Kick-Off Night Thursday.

Curriculum Supervisor Rebekah Hughes said grant-funded program prioritizes income-eligible families. Hughes said the kick-off night serves as a chance for parents to learn more.

“It’s just a time to come out and talk to the teachers,” Hughes said. “You can get your application, and they can help you with that. If parents have questions about documents that are required for Pre-K, they can help them with that as well.”

Hughes said the Pre-K program tends to fill up fast as parents tend to call after Christmas asking when registration begins for the program. Hughes said parents who plan to enroll their child into the program should attend the kick-off night to get ahead of the curve.

“We try to offer it early to get the everyone the information out,” Hughes said. “We try to advertise with our newspapers, our radio stations, we have it put on the sign at the bank, we advertise at the library just to get the information out to parents because it is never too soon to get your kids into school.”

Many school systems do not offer a Pre-K program. Hughes said Overton County Schools has offered it for several years and the program has been extremely beneficial.

“We just feel like that offering the Pre-K program it just gives those kids an extra start,” Hughes said. “It’s kind of like a bridge to Kindergarten, so we want to work with those teachers and help all the children we can with early literacy, and Pre-K is a big part of that.”

The Voluntary Pre-K Program Kick-Off Night will begin Thursday from 4:30pm-6pm. The Kick-Off Night will be located at AH Roberts, Allons Elementary, Hilham Elementary, Rickman Elementary, and Wilson Elementary.
