Overton Heritage Museum Highlighting UC Settlers

The Overton County Heritage Museum is highlighting the American Revolution and the people who settled in the county after the war.

Museum Director Paula Stover said that since the exhibit has opened, more information has come out about western expansion into Overton County.

“When we started the exhibit we thought we’d find 20 to 25 that settled in Overton County,” Stover said. “We found 50 and there’s a few more beginning to trickle in but we didn’t have that for our exhibit. We had found 50 men who settled here with either land grants or they bought land.”

Stover said museum staff worked to transcribe soldier’s pensions, land grants and are displaying authentic weapons from the period. She said there is a companion book for the exhibit highlighting freed slave settlers, the impact of women and settler’s war experiences.

“Supplying the troops, I really don’t know how… They had primitive conditions, bad conditions,” Stover said. “Supplying the troops with food, clothing, ammunition. It’s eye opening when you read some of it.”

Stover said the companion book is available for $40. The Overton County Heritage Museum is open Thursday through Saturday, from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM.
