Overton Food Pantry Opens Friday

Overton County’s Love Thy Neighbor Food Pantry begins food distribution Friday.

Director Scott Smith said his pastor at First Baptist Church had the idea for a food pantry back in January. Smith said they did some research and found that there was an extreme need for food assistance in Overton County.

“And I know to some people going to a food pantry is very disheartening or very demeaning or they’re embarrassed by it,” Smith said. “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Every one of us at some point of time in our life, it may not be a food pantry, but we all need help in some area. ”

Smith said the pantry provides supplementary food. He said supplies change but there are assortments of canned goods, bread, and sometimes meat products.

Smith said the pantry relies on donations, food contributions, and a regular supplies from Second Harvest Nashville from a Cookeville pickup point.

“You know love thy neighbor is scripture,” Smith said. “And we basically want to reach out to everybody and show everyone that everybody is loved.”

Smith said if you need the help, please come to the food pantry on Friday.

Love Thy Neighbor Food Pantry will be open from 2-5pm on Friday. Participants must register either online at LoveThyNeighborTN.org prior to the event or in person at the food distribution site 708 E Main in Livingston.
