The Overton County Commission applying for grant funding so local food pantries can purchase new equipment Monday.
County Executive Steven Barlow said the some $500,000 would flow through the county. Barlow said then, operations such as churches or non-profits can apply for a share.
“I found a food grant, and I reached out to them to find out more about it,” Barlow said. “My thoughts coming in was to try and help a lot of people and the seniors.”
A public hearing was held Monday before the commission approved the application. Barlow said a few residents attended supporting the grant application. Barlow said it can be used for items such as food packaging, refrigerators or deliver vehicles.
“It’s a good thing,” Barlow said. “We’re reaching out to anybody that might want to get involved with this. A few have already reached out to get more information.”
Barlow said any organization interested should reach out to his office. Barlow said the feedback will be needed as a part of the grant application process. Barlow said the grant will not require a local match.
