Overton BOE Approves Funding For Elementary Level Wrestling Team

An elementary grade level wrestling team will be coming to the Overton County School System.

The Overton County Board of Education approved team allocations of $1,000 per year for the program. Chairman Mike Hayes said based on feedback he has received, the team is about to start.

“Coach Newman from the high school had reached out to Dr. Donnie Holman cause they had interest from the grade school level,” Hayes said. “Obviously, any time we can put a program in at the elementary school level it just helps the high school programs even further.”

Director of Schools Donnie Holman said the team would be county wide for middle school students. Holman said he was told several students at that age left the county to wrestle for other teams.

“I guess it would be 5th through 8th grade, but I would have to check on that,” Holman said. “It might just be 7th and 8th.”

Hayes said Coach Cody Newman would lead the program. A teaching coaching supplement of $1,000 for certified teachers or a non-teaching coaching supplement of $750 was also approved with the funding.

“Any more extracurricular activities that we can support and have our kids involved in the better we are,” Hayes said.
