New Pickleball Courts Coming To Cane Creek Park

Construction on eight new outdoor pickleball courts at Cane Creek Park is expected to begin this summer.

Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said pickleball has become one of the most popular activities in the park’s gymnasium, but there are no dedicated pickleball courts. He said a first draft of the design is being tweaked and grading is set to begin in the next month.

“The need was recognized quite a while back,” Woods said. “And the folks who are enthusiastic about the sport have been coming to us and asking us to build pickleball courts and provide space for that sport. We recognized that. It’s in our master plan.”

Woods said the courts will be located in the fields next to the recreation center and gymnasium. Woods said the city will send the design out for bids when grading begins. He said with a growing community, expanding recreation programs and providing fresh options for activity is vital.

“We’re always looking for opportunities and ways to keep up and to provide services,” Woods said. “You know, different developments and new things that are available for our citizens, and this is a part of that.”

Woods said Cane Creek Park is the city’s largest and most heavily used park, making it the perfect candidate to play host to one of the most rapidly growing sports worldwide.

“When you include the Sportsplex and the recreation center, and then what’s on the other side of C.C. Camp Road with the dog park, and the picnic shelters, and the disc golf course, and the walking trail, and the mountain bike trails, and all of that, it just makes that even more of a valuable center of recreation for our community,” Woods said.

Woods said he cannot say for sure how long the project will take to complete, but he believes that it is in everybody’s best interest to move quickly. He said city crews will be responsible for grading and the rest of the project will be handled by a contractor.
