A Pickett County native will soon open a new medical center in Byrdstown.
Mayor Sam Gibson said Dr. James Thompkins has decided to build the 15,000 square foot facility on West Main Street.
“They purchased land and started from scratch,” Gibson said. “They’ve done the dirt work and now the building is going up. You give them a couple more weeks and they will probably have it under roof. I think they’re wanting to be open as soon as possible, hopefully in the spring.”
FirstChoice Family Care will utilize a loan program from the Upper Cumberland Development District and Peoples Bank to pay for the $1.85 million project. The UCDD Executive Committee met last week to approve the loan agreement.
“The Upper Cumberland Development District is a big asset to this entire Upper Cumberland area,” Gibson said. “We’re fortunate to be a member of the Development District and to be able to help small business people. They (UCDD) don’t do it all, but they work with the banks and individuals themselves to make it happen.”
Thompkins plans to hire 12 employees for the practice. The building will also have extra suites that can be rented out to other medical practitioners.
