Commissioner Application Window Closes Early Monday

The window to apply for the Overton County’s vacant District One Commission seat closes at 12:00pm on Monday.

County Executive Steven Barlow said the county has received around five applications with several more people who took the paperwork but have not turned it in. Barlow said his office has seen a lot of people at least show interest in the position.

“Once all the applications are turned in, we will turn it over to the commissioners and let them start doing some interviews and go from there,” Barlow said. “They’ll do their interviews and decide who they want to nominate.”

Barlow said the commission should get through interviews in time to nominate a new commissioner at January’s meeting. Barlow said he hopes to see more applicants before the deadline as district one covers the city limits of Livingston.

“Having a seat to fill is never fun,” Barlow said. “We will miss the commissioner that left, but hopefully we can get somebody with fresh ideas that’s ready to work and wanting to make a difference for their community.”

Barlow said there are currently two commissioners handling the work for district one instead of the usual three. Barlow said the nominated commissioner will have to be placed on certain committees to help with that workload and learn about the job.

“We’ll get them started and hopefully everything will turn out great and they’ll like it and stick around,” Barlow said.

Barlow said the official deadline to apply was meant to be Wednesday but he decided to extend the window because of the holiday weekend.

“We’re supposed to take them until the end of the month but we are closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving,” Barlow said. “So if they don’t catch us they can bring it in first thing Monday morning with us being closed half a day on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday.”
