New Tech Defensive Coordinator Chase Mummau said he wants to build on the defensive work of the Golden Eagles over the last two seasons.
Mummau takes over a Tech defense that allowed the fewest points in the OVC last season, holding its last four opponents under 10 points per game. Mummau said he looks forward to improving on last year’s 7-5 finish.
“I’m extremely excited about this opportunity.” Mummau said. “I don’t take this for granted at all. This is a great place, this school is amazing, and I believe we can turn it into one of the top tier programs in the OVC, if not the FCS.”
The defense returns nearly all its starters. The Golden Eagles limited teams to just 83 yards rushing per game and finished second in the OVC in turnover margin last season.
“We’ve got lofty goals for ourselves, but at the end of the day it all starts with the process of winning, planning, preparation, and execution and we have a great guy at the helm of our program in Coach [Bobby] Wilder,” Mummau said. “I believe in our general manager Dusty McMullen, I believe in Brian Scott, you know, and that’s why I’m so excited to be a part of this team. But most importantly, I’m excited to have another year with our players.”
Mummau played quarterback at Virginia Tech before entering coaching at Wake Forest. He came to Tech as Safeties Coach under Defensive Coordinator Greg Jones.
“I would not be sitting here currently in the position that I’m in now if it wasn’t for (Greg Jones),” Mummau said. “I owe everything to him first and foremost. He’s a hell of a football coach.”
The Golden Eagles new hire marks their third different defensive coordinator in the last three seasons.
