Monterey Terminates Police Chief Randolph

Monterey Police Chief Bill Randolph has been terminated after Monterey’s Civil Service Board unanimously voted in favor of the decision.

Monterey Mayor Alex Garcia said he did not attend the meeting to avoid showing impropriety.

“You know my stance on it was I suspended him pending the investigation,” Garcia said. “But I don’t have a say either way of what the board does whether they keep him or fire him.”

Garcia said the other police officers involved in the investigation have not received punishment as the comptroller’s office has yet to name the officers. Garcia said the town will have a work session in December to discuss further actions regarding the police department.

“We will post that as soon as we have a date,” Garcia said. “Where we will discuss if we want to investigate any further into the other officers that were involved in the situation and also if we want to have an audit of the police department, but we will be having that conversation with the board and our attorney as well for council.”

Garcia said the Civil Service board did decide to keep Chris Clayburn as the interim police chief and promote Andrew Neff to Sergeant. Garcia said the town will look to hire a police chief in the future.

“The town will move forward within the next coming weeks we will put a position out to hire a new chief,” Garcia said.

Garcia said despite the circumstances the police department has been rock solid. Garcia said it is a blessing to have officers who can step up on quick notice.

Civil Service Board Member Jon Phillips declined an interview but made a statement.

“The only thing I have to say about Bill is he is a good guy,” Phillips said.  “I hate what happened but our Civil Service Board has to do what we got to do.”
